West Canada Creek NY

Client and Fly Fisherman Sean with a beautiful West Canada Brown Trout

West Canada Creek is one of the most distinguished trout streams in central New York providing anglers with excellent fly fishing opportunities for Brown Trout and Brook Trout.

Beginning with its headwaters in the southeastern Adirondacks in Hamilton County NY. West Canada Creek offers excellent fly fishing throughout its 76 miles as it flows east and then south through Herkimer and Oneida counties, emptying into the Mohawk River near Herkimer, New York.

West Canada Creek truly is a fly fly fisherman’s paradise. The major aquatic insect hatches typically begin in May following mothers day. In years where precipitation and heat index remains at normal levels, fly fishing typically peaks in late June and early July. However fly Fishing opportunities remain abundant through mid August.

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation maintains an aggressive annual stocking program for the West Canada Creek. A healthy aquatic  insect and baitfish population have contributed to a very healthy Brown Trout population with an excellent stocking survival rate.

Average size Brown Trout in the West Canada Creek range from 14 to 16 inches with very good numbers of respectable residents ranging from 18 – 22 inches. West Canada Creek is also home to many trophy 24 to 28 inch Brown Trout ranging from 6 to 10 pounds.  However, the West Canada will not give up her most prized treasures without a fight. These trophy Brown Trout are the wariest of fish and will challenge your fly fishing skill to the fullest.

The Flycraft Stealth. Ready for launch!

Aboard my Flycraft I am able to accommodate up to two fisherman per day on a full drifting or hybrid drifting/wading guided fly fishing trip. As always, fisherman and fisherwomen are welcome to come ready to fish with their own fly fishing fishing outfits.  Or, we can fully outfit you with waders and a fly rod that is tuned and ready to fish. My recommended setup for fly fishing the West Canada Creek is a traditional 9ft 5wt fly rod. Balanced with a complementing 5wt fly fine, reel, and 9ft 5X tapered leader.  We supply all the flies to target the beautiful Brown Trout. However, if you have a selection of you favorite confidence fly patters that you would like to try, we encourage you to bring them along!

All guided fly fishing trips are custom tailored around each clients goals and objectives around a guided fly fishing experience. My typical West Canada Creek Program includes about 6 hours of time on the water focus on achieving these goals. We launch around 3:00PM and pull off the water around 9:00PM. It is always in our best interest to be on the water for anticipated evening insect hatches and or spinner falls.  However, hours for all guided trips can be adjusted based on client requests or needs.

Non alcoholic beverages are provided and considering we are on the water through dinner time. I also enjoy grilling up a streamside dinner. Nothing quite like a streamside grill and chill while discussing fly fishing tactics and waiting for the magic hour to begin.

I am also able to assist with lodging recommendations for anyone visiting the Central NY area and interested in fly fishing the West Canada Creek.

Whether you interested in learning how to fly fish for Brown Trout on the West Canada Creek or a seasoned fly caster. I would be honored to share the day with you on the water.  The West Canada Creek holds it own compared to may of the famed trout rivers in the US without the fishing pressure that comes with such titles.
